Canaan 11

Summary:

Alphard interrupts Natsume and throws her a card with Borner data while giving Yunyun and Maria a chance to escape.  Alphard doesn’t want to do any more Borner research, but she doesn’t mind others forking the development while the Snakes provide technical support.  Natsume then calls in US-China forces to destroy the Factory so that the PLA can take credit for capturing the terrorists that attacked the meeting and stop holding a grudge against America.  Canaan goes in to search for Hakkoo, but in a truly awkward scene finds Hakkoo making sweet love to Santana’s corpse.  Hakkoo then tosses some Yunyun medicine to Canaan and tells her to GTFO.

Meanwhile, a heavily-armed Liang waits for the military intruders only to be surprised by Alphard and Cummings.  Liang jealously beats up Cummings, but gets schooled hard by a knife-wielding Alphard.  Desperate to make Alphard look at her instead of Canaan, Liang foolishly ingests experimental synesthia pills that rock her senses and make her look a little like Canaan.  Seeing her reflection in the mirror, Liang begs Cummings to kill Canaan, and Cummings agrees in exchange for Liang’s love.  As Cummings blows a hole in Liang’s belly, Liang tells him what he wants to hear as she dies in his arms.  Alphard Alshua isn’t moved, though, since she is still pissed that Liang trolled her with a fake Siam letter that led to her capture by the CIA.

Reaction:

So what was the point of Yunyun and Maria going into the Flower Garden?  And how did Minoru and Canaan get out of the factory?  My guess is that Minoru gave Hakkoo pointers on necrophilia in exchange for shutting up.  It’s interesting how Natsume haggled for both the Borner data and a picnic date with Alphard in exchange for destroying the factory.  Diplomacy rocks.  Unlike diplomacy, however, Maria sucks.  I can barely even tell why she’s on the show, and it was so awkward and silly when Maria took Canaan’s photo after Canaan did all the hard work.  BTW, I have to ask… who gets to sit in the front seat on the ride back?

I thought that Liang got an awesome death scene, but what about Santana?  He got s3xx0red so hard that the roof caved in and afterwards even Minoru needed a cigarette.  Sucks for the other girls that used to work at Cosplay Santana.  I felt bad for Cummings, but that’s what you get for being a heterosexual in a Type-Moon series.  Meanwhile, Alphard continues to get the very best action sequences, and her disarm moves were brilliant.  I was surprised at how flowery Liang’s attacks were, compared to her idol’s direct attacks, and I have to assume that all of Liang’s slashes were aimed at Alphard’s suspenders.  I also assume that the reason that Liang is so crazy is that she had to watch her beloved Alphard research naked Canaan-esque fun dolls for years.  Liang’s line about Alphard being trapped in an era without Liang was really brilliant, and I’ll miss that poor crazy girl.

Canaan 10

Summary:

In a flashback we see Santana returning to the Factory to find Hakkoo crying over the dead kid’s body.  In spite of Liang’s protests, Alphard agrees to let Santana take Hakkoo as long as Santana agreed to refer more customers to Alphard’s mail order bride business and a few other conditions.  Back in the present, Liang baits Hakkoo into using a voice attack, only to reveal that Hakkoo has inadvertently blown a trussed up Santana’s mind.  Santana’s last request is to hear Hakkoo verbalize her love for him, and she tearfully obliges.

While Canaan and Minoru fight off too-far-gone Unblooms, Maria and Yunyun take a break from cat’s cradle to sneak after Alphard and Cummings deep down into the Flower Garden.  Even Natsume stops by to blow open a wall with a grenade launcher and somehow redeem herself.  Liang confirms that the experiments were conducted to create another Canaan, since the Ua virus boosted Canaan’s synesthesia tremendously.  This synesthesia backfires on Canaan when Liang triggers an ANC so that only Canaan is vulnerable to a shell-shocked Hakkoo muttering “I love you” and dragging the (strangely light) body of Santana.  Only Minoru’s quick thinking allows him to mack on the vulnerable Hakkoo and get her to STFU.  Downstairs, Maria is surprised to find Canaan encased in ice as Natsume provides the sugoi cliffhanger.

Reaction:

The most pressing question in this episode is just how wide are Hakkoo’s hips?  Previously, Yunyun had to sit in Hakkoo’s lap, but when Hakkoo moved to the front seat, Minoru, Maria, Yunyun, and Canaan all fit in the back comfortably.  I never really cared much about Hakkoo x Santana, but this episode had a lot of amusing moments.  Apparently the Snakes are an organization devoted to stamping out all heterosexual couples, and if there was any romance in Liang x Cummings, you know that Cummings would have died in the helicopter last episode.  Also, Liang trolling Hakkoo by pretending to be affected by killer karaoke was awesome (although immediately topped by Liang setting a Dr. Claw trap with her only dress and then being forced to change into lingerie).

I’m glad we at least found out that those ridiculous Unbloom mascot heads were designed to cancel noise and UV-rays, but couldn’t they have been at least a little smaller?  It looks like the Canaan in the ice was just a clone, since the left arm did not have a snake tattoo, but I couldn’t tell if the clone was wearing Canaan’s (or any) clothes or not.  I highly doubt that Natsume will end up shooting at Yunyun and Maria, and I was disappointed that she tossed away the grenade launcher in favor of a pistol.  I really loved how twisted Liang is, and she seems like the type of person who would upload a clip of Hakkoo karaoke in order to Rickroll everyone.  And what the heck does Hakkoo’s voice smell like?

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Episode 22

Wah ha ha ha ha!

Wah ha ha ha ha!

Summary:

It seems they were short on the budget this week as episode 22 began with a quick recap of episode 21. Never the less, the action picks up right where it left off with the universally beloved Ran Fan struck down by the evil King Bradley. Luckily Ran Fan is saved by the awesome sword fighting skills of Ling Yao, who manages to put up a good fight against King Bradley. Unfortunately even with his skill Yao ends up being caught indoors by King Bradley and Gluttony. At the last moment, a reawakened Ran Fan manages to pull something cylindrical out of her mouth set off a flashbang with her mouth and with that Ling attempts his escape.

This was basically my only move when I used to play Rainbow 6...

This was basically my only move when I used to play Rainbow 6…

With escape imminent King Bradley finally reveals the power of his hidden eye and stops Yao and Ran Fan before they can escape.

Meanwhile the episode flashes back to Winry as she visits Maes Huges’ grave with his wife and child. Afterwards, while thinking about her own dead parents, Winry overhears the people of Central remark that the Elric Brothers are fighting Scar yet again and she rushes to find them.

This was more fun with Sheryl, Ranka, Alto and what's his face Vajra green thing

This was more fun with Sheryl, Ranka, Alto and what's his face Vajra green thing

It is there that Winry finally overhears Ed’s speech to Scar and realizes that he was the one that killed her father.

Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya… er Winry Rockbell. You killed my father. Prepare to die. (needs more emo face distortion)

With this we go into flashback mode as we explore more in depth the reasons why Scar was fighting in the first place. (Luckily for Baka-Raptor this involves no lolis and doesn’t really show any soft side to Scar)

Apparently the Ishbal guys are actually citizens of the country of Amestris and were being persecuted for no apparent reason by the blond hair blue eyed army dudes who were led by a guy in a military outfit with black hair and a mustache… HMMM just saying y’know?

I swear, we're not Nazis!

I swear, we're not Nazis!

Anyway it seems Scar’s brother (voiced by none other than the awesome Takehito Koyasu, the only male seiyuu I fanboy over (there I said it)) had just figured out something really interesting about alchemy when the war broke out. Knowing that he sucks at fighting his brother leaves all his research to Scar, but unfortunately they are attacked by the army only seconds later. Using his newly found alchemy skills, Scar’s older brother saves him but unfortunately Scar is left… scared and without an arm. Knowing his younger brother is about to die, Scar’s older brother uses alchemy to graft his own arm onto Scar. We flash forward into the near future as Scar wakes up in the Rockbell’s hospital. Seeing the blond hair blue eyed Rockbells, Scar goes berserk and kills them before running off and burying his brother’s research.

Back in present day, Winry cannot find the will to kill Scar with the gun she found on the ground, and as he reaches out to kill her instead, Ed runs to protect her. Seeing a bit of his older brother in Ed, Scar hesitates, enough time for Al to kick him away as the episode ends.

Yes yes it was a tragedy Winry... now let's have pity sex.

Yes yes it was a tragedy Winry… now let's have pity sex.

Reaction:

Coming off last week’s rather weak re-introduction of Scar into the plot, this week’s plot was much, much stronger. Obviously the most important fact in the entire episode was that Ran Fan did not die, although we’ll have to wait till next week to see what really happens to her.

The second most important fact though was undoubtedly Scar’s older brother’s research. As he remarks, he found something ‘odd’ about the way that Alchemy is handled in Amestris compared to Xing. This information further lets him deflect a direct attack by the State Alchemist who kills all of Scar’s family and allows him to graft his arm to Scar. Of course the information is all written down in the now buried book of research and now one of the major plot points will undoubtedly be Scar’s eventual return to the ‘good’ side and helping out everyone by leading them to the book.

What does the book say? What will it give us? Perhaps the research showed that Alchemy in Amestris was not complete. Much like how the original series saw people ripped from World War II Britian, alchemy in FMA:Brotherhood may do something similarly wacky. The concept of equivalent trade is important here, as while Alchemy is able to turn something into someone else, the origin of the actual energy of alchemy is a mystery. How does drawing some circles and putting your hands together give the energy to do things? It is likely the source of this energy and how it’s handled that I think will become important as the plot progresses and may be a final plot point as to how the Homonculus are going to be defeated in the end. And also since we never actually saw Scar’s brother die, he may still be alive somewhere, armless and unable to perform alchemy again.

Finally the last major plot point is Ed and Winry getting closer and closer. Will we soon see the FMA:B equivalent of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince with snogging everywhere? Only time will tell.

Canaan 09

Summary:

While Liang Qi sits in the factory trying to get_sum(), Santana tells Yunyun to get in the truck since they’re all going to the same place.  Hakkoo gives the yuri thing a try, but when Yunyun reveals that she was going back to the village to die, both Hakkoo and Maria take turns beating Yunyun up.  It turns out all Borners need a unique medicine to survive, and the villagers who could not become Borners (the Unbloom) are just kept around so researchers can study what went wrong.  One of these Unblooms attacks the group, but when Hakkoo shouts at Canaan to spare the Unbloom, Hakkoo ends up indirectly killing the Unbloom and spilling all the coffee.  Great, how is Santana supposed to stay awake on the drive back now?  Minoru salvages the day by making Maria take a shot of the Unbloom and making faces at petulant Hakkoo to cheer her up.

We finally find out what happened in the village.  Back when Santana was in Langley, they decided to cure the villagers of a mysterious virus by dropping disinfectant on them (read: Ua virus) as part of The Flower Garden Project.  Natsume’s NGO group is trying to find evidence of the CIA working with The Snakes, in order to blackmail the CIA.  Anyway, Liang is tired of waiting for Yunyun to bring her Canaan, and so ambushes the group by firing missiles from a helicopter.  Alliances get confused when Alphard comes to the rescue by shooting at Liang from her own helicopter, and Cummings attempts to betray Alphard.  Fortunately, Alphard switched out Cumming’s sidearm with a pellet gun, and she spares him because both Cummings and Liang are struggling so hard for love.  Alphard then drags a wounded Canaan out of the building, talks a little smack, and tells them to meet her at the factory.

Reaction:

Why didn’t Alphard just make Siam sign a non-compete or something?  My favorite part of this episode was when Canaan went up against a scrubby Unbloom and discovered how hard it is to shoot without using crazy hacks.  Man, Canaan sucks when she isn’t cheating; no wonder Alphard is so damn angry.  The only one who really made out well in this episode was Cummings, cause he got to have Alphard-sama abuse him, and he got to wipe himself with Alphard’s handkerchief!  Someone get him a fresh pair of pants before heading to the factory!  Yunyun also got a surprising amount of screentime (even loli flashbacks), but I guess it’s not like Hakkoo can tell us what happened.

There were a lot of intriguing revelations in this episode.  I find it very interesting how Alphard is so similar to Siam, right down to the odd light brown synesthesia glow.  I wasn’t sure if Alphard saying Canaan’s real name was Zetsubou (”despair”) was real or just smack talk, but I am really looking forward to the final battle between the two.  I figure it will be just like Nanoha where Canaan beats up Alphard, and then falls in love with her so that they can have matching love-love tattoos and join Maria’s harem.  I don’t know how Liang will fit into all of this, but I’m really surprised that she’s not dead yet.  Also, how about Hakkoo catching Alphard’s cheating heart eye?

Project NewSpeak’s Visit to Anime Expo 2009

NewSpeakTV.com recently posted a very funny video of their trip to Anime Expo 2009. There’s a great moment where they interview a Chun Li cosplayer but treat her as if she’s the real deal:

Question: And how does it feeI that it is by far the worst movie made in the history of the United States?
Chun Li: I would agree with that, but I have seen Dragonball Evolution, which is probably worse.

Note: There’s a teeny bit of inappropriate language, but nothing too bad!
